Coilpacks Are In!
Hrmm, this isn't so bad. The Sunnyvale VW folks got my ignition coils in and the service advisor I talked to gave me a call just now to reschedule my appointment. 5 days turnaround doesn't suck at all. Bringing my car back Monday of next week, and VWoA will cover my rental for the day. Rad.

Germish Is Fun
Hallo. Es ist elf Uhr, und ich bin schläfrig. Nachty Nacht.
Yes, the nighty night is blatant Germish, but it's fun to say, isn't it?

Oops, forgot the translation.
Hello. It's 11 o'clock, and I'm schleepy. Nighty night.

Oops, I just realized I was telling time like an American. Let's try that again, in German time.
Hallo. Es war drei und zwanzig Uhr, und ich war schläfrig. Ich habe Nachty Nacht gesagt, und dann ich bin gegangen zu Bett.

Biker Boyz
On Timbo's recommendation I watched Biker Boyz, because, as he said, "It's like The Fast and the Furious, only with motorcycles and black guys." Well, he was right. The bikes were beautiful and the movie was terrible.
On a side note, Laurence Fishburne gets to play characters with cool names. Morpheus in the Matrix, Smoke in Biker Boyz. He got to ride around in a phat purple Hayabusa (mit NOS!), too.
On a not-so-side note, Tyson Beckford in spandex! WhoO!

I have to say, I'm disappointed with the new Limp Bizkit album. Where's the energy? Where's the anger? What's with all this "singing"?
This is what I get for buying CDs like a good little consumer. Next time I should download a few to see whether it's worth my money first.
At least I didn't buy the new DMB album too. He finally made it off my unlistenable list, but now he's off my buy list, too.

It's really frustrating when you spend a lot of time designing and working on something to get it just right, and then people come along afterward and work on it and instead of following the rules that were painstakingly thought out and laid down they just do what they think will work and end up messing it all up.

Another visit to the DMV out of the way! That took only, oh, 4 hours. I managed to go to the gym, turn in my traffic school certificate, eat lunch at the mall, and study a couple chapters of German in that time. That, and my motorcycle is now (almost) registered! Whoo.

So I'm learning German on
So I'm learning German on my commute these days. I was thinking maybe I'd throw a new phrase up here every couple days or so. That way you can all learn German with me.
Let's see, what did I learn this week? Something about time.
How about some Spin Doctor time in German?
Wie viel Uhr ist es?... Halb fünf.
Translation:
What time is it?... Four-thirty.
Okay, those of you who worked with me a few months back know that I knew that from before. It was on the whiteboard in what used to be the Fearless Leader's cube.
I've wanted to write this post for about a week now, so I'm actually a few phrases / topics behind. I learned how to order drinks a few days ago. Since it's Friday, here's something you guys can go out and use tonight:
Ein Bier, bitte!

It's nice to see that I'm not the only one sending "Hey, you idiot!" replies to the non-understanding one.
And I don't mean non-understanding in the compassionate sense.
And about that sentence above (okay, this one too), sometimes it's really satisfying to begin a sentence with "And". Just because you're not supposed to. Kinda like how you're not supposed to turn sentence fragments into full sentences. Kinda like how it's not proper to use slang like "kinda".
That was a very satisfying paragraph.

Hi Sunnyvale VW. Bye Sunnyvale VW.
So I realized today that most normal people leave for work between 7 and 8 AM. I say this because pretty much all the cars on my block are gone by 7:30.
I feel like such a slacker.
I got up at 6 this morning to go to Sunnyvale VW, though. It's nice getting on the roads before the sun comes up. I likes, I likes.
Didn't get my ignition coils replaced. The lady on the phone neglected to ask me which engine I had. Supposedly the VW dealerships stock plenty of 1.8T ignition coils, but aren't allowed to do so for the VR6 due to supply issues. Lame.
Also lame is that my door cannot be adjusted under warranty because my car has logged over 12,000 miles. That, and they don't know whether my steering wheel click can be covered under warranty either until they figure out what's wrong with it. Well, screw that, I'm just gonna do it myself.
I just need to get a VAG-COM so I can clear the airbag light I'll get after messing with the steering wheel / column.
In happy car news, I got to hear my car from the outside today when the service advisor drove it around to listen for clicks. It sounds goooood. ![]()

I managed a few good breakaways. I outskated and I deked, but when I got to the goalie I couldn't help but focus on her head, and kept ending up shooting there, and instead of ducking like I had requested before the game, the goalie kept bringing the glove up and catching the puck.
Well, at least I can lift the puck now.

VanHOOoover
Back from Seattle and Vancouver. I didn't bring my laptop this time, so I jotted blog notes on a piece of paper instead. Big long post about the last couple days to follow. Yeah, I know how the details of my life excite you.
Thursday, 5:30 PMish
Realized last minute that I have huge bruises on my knees from dropping my bike. Need pantyhose! Ran to the Walgreens near Doug's house. For some reason it seemed that 90% of the pantyhose they carried was for fat people. Fat, as in, I could probably fit my entire body into one pantyhose leg. Eeek.
9:30 to 9:45 PMish... In The Air
Space Invaders in real life! I want to play too! Who wants to Space Invade San Francisco?
On a game-related note, anyone ever stop to ponder whether "Game Boy Advance" is grammatically correct? Shouldn't it be "Game Boy Advanced"? It's almost as if they named the thing with a Japanese accent!
11:00 PMish... In Seattle
Met up with my parents in Seattle. They're getting old. They look older, they act older. My dad's not as sharp as he used to be. My mom nags more. She's not as sharp either. Am I going to get dull when I get old too? That scares me a bit. I'm mainly scared for them right now, but when I apply what I see to myself it makes it even worse.
Friday, Morningish... Boeing Factory Tour!
Rental car from Thrifty. Hunday Sonata. No power! No clutch! I did a few "Oh my doG I'm going to stall!"s the first ten or so minutes.
Finally got to go take the Boeing Factory tour. It kicked major ass. That building is huuuge! Well, I guess that's what you'd expect, being a 747 factory and all. It's the biggest building in the world. Raaad.
Side note on the tour. Our tour guide looked like a Las Vegas version of Ned Flanders. He had the glasses and the bushy mustache and everything. Corny humor, too!
While waiting for the tour to start, my mom asked, "Did you bring your passport?" "Oops," I replied, followed by a very loud completely contained in my head "SHIT!" Turned out to be okay; the Canadian border lady didn't even ask to see ID.
Later... Wedding!
Ran into two and half extra hours of total stop and go traffic on the way to Vancouver. Missed the wedding ceremony as a result. Very sad. Made it for pictures, though, so if you went by pictures we made it!
The reception was nice. My cousin looked great. I think we had 200+ people there. I don't even want to know how much that cost. I'm guessing it's enough to buy a GTI... with a supercharger.
It was even better getting to see relatives I haven't seen in almost a decade. People grew up! People got old! I guess that's what happens, huh?
Saturday, 8:00 AMish... Time To Head Back
Managed to get back into the U.S. with only a small lecture on how it's important to bring my passport with me so that they can figure out where I really belong. Phew.
Made good time getting back to Seattle. Drove to the Space Needle to see if I could finally get up there, since I had half an hour to spare. Parked, walked up, no luck. There was a decent line going for rides up. Bummer. Next time, I guess. At least I did the Boeing tour this trip.
Had a terrible Starbucks latte on my way out this morning, even though the person who made it knew what he was doing. Later, I got another latte at the Seattle's Best shack in the Alaska Airlines terminal. This one was made by some lady who looked like she had no idea what she was doing. It tasted great. What's going on? Is it the beans? The machines? Hey, I rhymed.
I left a few Sprocket hairs in the rental car. That cat gets everywhere!

Not So Sleepy Retirementville
Well, there was a little bit of excitement in Doug's sleepy neighborhood of mostly retired folks yesterday evening. A couple probation kids fishtail a car sideways onto a sidewalk, a front lawn, a driveway, and into the rear bumper of the local policeman's Honda Accord. The next thing you know a couple other probation kids who "happen" to be hanging out nearby are scared shitless by the angry police officer with the gun and the unhappy rear bumper, people sit on them, and the officer takes off after the occupants of the first vehicle. 5 minutes later there are 2 police cruisers and 2 unmarked police cars at the intersection. Amazing how many resources the police department can allocate when it's something involving one of their own. Anyway, the driver and passenger are nowhere to be found, and Doug and I get to sit in the back of a cruiser and tell them that, no, those two kids you're showing us who look like they just peed in their pants are not the ones who flattened the innocent little bush at the end of the police officer's driveway. Thank you very much and good night; we're going to go eat our severely overdone steaks that have been sitting on the grill for waaay too long now.
Doug thinks that if they had hit my car instead I'd have caught them and beaten the living daylights out of them.
Food for thought, I thought.
And now that I'm done thinking, my response is, yes, and I would have brought my 20" Maglite.

My boss leaves early. He bails from the office every day between 3 and 4 PM. That's after what's always a 1 to 1.5 hour lunch starting at around 11:30. Quote of the Night
Had dinner with a couple of friends from high school tonight. I hadn't seen one of them in over half a decade. You know what's cool? After all these years, to me it's still a simple, hey, I know her! There was no feeling of needing to be all formal or on my toes or anything. I could just sit there and be me, which was most excellent.
That brings up a good question, though. What's the me now like compared to the me in high school? For sure I must talk more now. I don't think I ever said a word in high school, which I guess was at least better than in middle school, where I practically said negative words. Negative as in vacuum, not bad, but I guess you all figured that.
Went to PF Chang's. One more chain restaurant off the list. The lighting was waaay dim. I got up to go to the bathroom and with my terrible night vision I felt like I was going to bump into everything and everyone. Foamy hand soap at the sink. Raaad.
Anyway, quote for you. I'll even give it QotN status.
There was a boy... and he was in charge.
I'm still waiting to hear the rest of the story...

Bye bye, John Ritter. You were the one actor I remember from my childhood. I used to sit and watch Three's Company with my mom every night. I bet I learned a few lines of English from you.
That reminds me, was anyone confused by the fact that they had two landlords who looked a heck of a lot alike? One was older and than the other, but as a little kid they were always the same person to me, until this one episode that they were both in and one of them came home and found the other one there... or something like that. Am I making all this up? Maybe. Or maybe not. I can almost still see that scene in my head 'cause it confused me that much.
The website says Mr. Roper and Mr. Furley. That sounds about right.

And More Brakes (3)
Back from my squeak test (a.k.a. insurance and gym run). Back from my failed squeak test, that is. Anti-squeak goo or not, you're gonna hear me stopping from a mile away.
At least I know I can change my front brake pads on my own now.

The Insurance Industry Is Screwed Up
Remember that car insurance craziness from earlier this year? Well, here's some more craziness, this time for my motorcycle insurance.
Progressive, who is my car insurance company, quoted me $3720 for one year of motorcycle coverage. Divide by two, that's $1860 for 6 months. The guy who did my quote laughed. I could buy myself a second motorcycle for that amount.
On to State Farm. They quoted me $162.43 for 6 months. Needless to say, I went with them instead. I showed up at their office to finish up paperwork. Upon running a record check, I was told they would have to charge me more because of my little speeding violation / license suspension from three years ago. But then... I got a good driver discount (!) and my final bill came down to $150.40.
Yes! $150.40 for 6 months of insurance! Does that rock or what?
Strangely, their car quote was higher than what I'm currently paying Progressive.
I just don't get this whole insurance thing.

Brakes (2)
Clip number two was harder than it should have been. Ever try to do something the wrong way about fifty times, and then all of a sudden you do it once the right way and wonder why you didn't do it that way to begin with?
Anyway...
Time to go for a squeak test.

One brake down, one more to go. Round two of goo setting in progress.
I'm secretly relieved that I managed to get the clip back on. Amazing how much extra pseudo hand strength a pair of gloves will give you.

The Day Off Report
The car is clean, my trunk is now red cold cathode lit, my passenger side mirror works properly again, and I'm waiting for my anti-squeak brake goo to set before I remount the pads.
I'll try to take a picture of the cold cathode after the sun goes down. I hope it's bright enough. Anything's better than the stupid little OEM bulb, I suppose.
I forgot to take pictures of the install. Not enough hands anyway.
Yes, and I know, I owe you all pictures of the bike. Perhaps this weekend?

I'm not used to using my passenger side mirror anymore. I check my mirror, then I do my mirrorless check of what's behind me anyway.
It's weird having blue tinted glass on one side and untinted glass on the other side. I hope the driver side split mirror comes soon!

I'm really glad it's football season again. I've missed it.
But you know what's weird? I don't seem to have the attention span for an entire game anymore. Two or three quarters in I start feeling like I should be doing something else.
Maybe it's work stress.

My replacement passenger side mirror
My replacement passenger side mirror finally arrived. It's in and I can see again but there's something screwy with the motor. It's acting like I sprained it or something. Missing some range of motion. This weekend I'm gonna pull both mirrors out and compare the two sides. Maybe with a bit of wrenching I can get it to work properly again.

My Very Own Motorcycle!
I bought a motorcycle today. It cost me more than I was originally going to spend on a bike, but I also like this one more than some of the ones I was originally thinking of buying.
I also bought new sunglasses to replace the ones I broke last week. They're Spys. They cost me more than more than my last pair did, but I also like this pair more than my last pair.
I was going to by a Carbonio intake for my car today, too, but after the motorcycle and the sunglasses I was feeling too poor.
Could it be? Could my car budget start shrinking now that I have a bike?
Whoa.

Just read an article in ESPN Magazine on David Boston. That man is a hottie. No, not just a hottie. A massive hottie. If the NFL went topless, I'd have to watch every Chargers game this season.
I tried to find a good picture of him online, but he's in uniform in all of them. In lieu of a scanner I used my camera to take a pic of the pic in the magazine, but the pic didn't come out so well. So, if you happen to come across the September 1st issue of ESPN Magazine, flip to page 118 so you can see what I'm talking about.

VLF Ouch
Got my registration renewal in the mail today. My eyes bugged out of my head and then I checked the DMV site. They said:
The increase in Vehicle License Fees that was announced on Friday, June 20, 2003, affects vehicle registrations that become due October 1, 2003, or later. Vehicle registrations that become due before that date will be unaffected by the increase.
Vehicle owners whose registrations become due on and after October 1, 2003, cannot pay early to avoid the increase.
$499 to register my car for next year. This calls for another dogfarkingdarnit.
Or maybe two. Dogfarkingdarnit!

Something to blog from Saturday. Went to the Sausalito Art and Wine festival. 6 bucks for parking, 40 bucks for admission, 6 bucks for a caveman smoked turkey thigh, 6 bucks for fried artichoke hearts, 5 bucks for water and soda, 4 bucks for bridge toll, and a few more for gas. 70 someodd bucks, even though no art was bought and no wine consumed. Imagine how much an art-loving alky would have shelled out. Aie!

CAI vs. CAI
Okay, after a whole weekend of having things to blog but not being motivated enough to actually post anything I'm back. Hi.
I have a dilemma. Which CAI to get? I'm debating between a molded cross link polyurethane one from EVO MS and a carbon fiber one from Carbonio. The Carbonio costs about 40 dollars more. It'll look cooler, but it's under the hood, so who's gonna see? How much less heat does carbon fiber conduct relative to mcl polyurethane? 40 bucks worth? Hrmm...
In other car related news, here's a tutorial on how to cook rice.
