Clutchless Shifting ... In My Car??

I've known for a while now that I can jerk myself back and forth on my motorcycle by shifting sans-clutch (not that I do it much, and I realize that it jerks me back and forth only when I'm not doing it properly), but I didn't know I could do it in my car. It's not quite the same thing, but it's nifty nonetheless (to know, not necessarily to do).

Why didn't I know this? It seems I've had a big chunk of car missing in my head between the clutch and the wheels: the transmission. It's not that I didn't know the transmission existed, but I just never took the time to place it anywhere in the map-o-car that lives in my head. Go me.

In any case, it's possible, and understanding why my car lets me do it involves words like synchromesh, which should have been reason enough for me to have learned this a long time ago.

Neato.

Most modern cars can do that, but a lot of practice is recommended. Try driving an antique car or a big truck without synchronizers, and you'll very quickly appreciate them.
