Desert Tribe: The Bestest Last Place Team Evarrr
Desert Tribe played for the Keg tonight ... and won!
Won by a lot, actually. Final score: 7-2.
I scored 4 goals. On one hand, I'm really happy about that. On the other hand, I find myself wondering how long it'll be before I have another 4 goal game.
In any case, it's nice to leave Satuday night hockey on a high note.
Next season: Thursday nights.

Desert Tribe: Keg Game, Here We Come!
After a 2 month absence from Saturday night hockey, my teammates IMed me and told me to show up, because it was playoff week, and we aren't allowed to have subs in playoff games.
So I showed up, and boy am I glad I did! We played the black team tonight, and won 4-2. WoohoO!
I managed 2 goals and an assist. The first goal was classic: a tip-in from a Secret Weapon blue line pass. The second one was sweet: I chased for a loose puck, poked it away from McJedi *just* before she got to it (I saw the puck? what?), picked it up, remembered to try to shoot like the Canadian skater I saw on TV (eh?), and put a nice solid shot through the goalie's five-hole.
In retrospect, just before the first goal, Secret Weapon asked for 2. Ask for 3 next time, eh? :-D
The assist was nice, too. I poked the puck away behind the net, sent it up front, it ended up on Zephy's stick, and she put it into the back of the net. Huzzah!
After the game, we mused about our last-place standing, and how it's misleading, because we're actually decent when we all show up.
Decent enough to win the Keg next week? I sure hope so!

Desert Tribe: Three!
We made great progress on the attendance front tonight, first doubling the previous game's turnout, then tripling it with a new addition to the team. Yup, that's right, we had all of three Tribespeople show up tonight: me, Ron, and a new roller hockey convert named Z-something. (Darnit, my memory sucks.)
In any case, we forfeited yet another game, added 4 subs, and played the yellow team. I think we won 8-1. In retrospect, perhaps we should have laid off after 4 or 5, but I don't think we were really thinking about the score. Roops.
I scored two goals, the first from a wrist shot that I sort of have again, and the second from a garbage poke through traffic. Nothing super fancy or noteworthy; just documenting.
It's nice to be playing again.

Desert Tribe: Hello? Team? Where Are You?
For the second time this season, Desert Tribe had only one player show up. I got to be this week's lucky lone player.
Lucky, indeed, because we ended up bringing on three fun subs and playing 4-on-4. After a while, we stopped trying to score and started passing the puck to the newbies on the other team. Then we started trying to score on our own goalie. Then the other goalie skated up to our blue line and started playing D. It was pretty darned amusing.
All in all, a fun "game". :)

Desert Tribe: One Fun Saturday Night
'Twas a night of goodness at Ice Oasis.
To start, Ron scored! Whoo, Ron! I was so excited I did the wave for him from the bench.
And then, I scored! I had a breakaway and managed to roof the puck. It made the chain on top of the net pop up. Radness.
The ref came by afterward and said, "That was pretty. You're going to see that in your dreams." Don't mind if I do.
Post-game, we had a yummy dinner upstairs. They resurrected the corn chowder! I had a cup of that, a tasty salad, and finally got to try the bread pudding. So good. Went perfectly with an exciting Sharks game on the big screen.
But wait, there's more! After that came 7 rounds of pool with Secret Weapon. I scratched 4 times on the 8-ball. It was hilarious.
We won the game, 4-1. And the best part? All 4 goals came from Tribers.
:)

Desert Tribe: WhoO! ShoO!
Totally fun. Especially the "WU!" and the "SHU!".
We had to forfeit the game 'cause we started with only 4 skaters (not including subs). I don't really care, so no biggie. We unofficially won, so woot! Final score: 2-1.
Lucinda scored again. She also pulled another beautiful move, a wraparound backand. She remains my hero for another week. :)

What can I say? There was lots to cheer for.
Most notably, Lucinda pulled off an amazing deke in the 3rd period ... and made it look easy.
She's my new hero.
Final score: 6-4. The win is just icing. ;)

Desert Tribe: Steve The Hat Trick Machine
What can I say? I'm glad he's on my team.
The game went down (something) like this: They scored, we scored, they scored, we scored, we scored, we scored, we scored, we scored, they scored, and then ran out of time.
Final score: 6-3.
I batted the puck out of the air today. Twice. On purpose. I've never done that before.
Cool.

Desert Tribe: I'M PISSED OFF!
Desert Tribe played the black team today. Hooray, black team. I like the black team. I was, however, not so happy with a couple of their subs, who definitely do not play in the friendly spirit of Saturday Night Hockey.
In particular, I was not happy with the one twice my size who, at the end of a race to the puck, asked, in a very trash talky manner, "Whaddaya gonna do, huh?"
I took the puck back down to the other end of the ice, scored, and yelled back, "THAT'S WHAT I'M GONNA DO!" You dumbfuck.
Okay, he could have said much worse. With me, however, any kind of trash talk sets off a very short fuse to a very large cache of very dry gunpowder. If he had instead asked, "Whaddaya wanna do?" the reply would have been, "I want to bash your head in with my stick, watch you lie on the ice bleeding from your skull, put the butt end of my stick on your windpipe, and slowly lean in." I actually visualized it, and the part with the windpipe was especially satisfying.
I scare myself when I get that pissed off. I'm not normally violent. I don't fight with people, physically or verbally. I haven't yelled except to cheer in years. I objectively know that most things aren't worth getting angry over.
But here I am, angry. Really angry. Wishing that I'd responded to his "question" by taking out his knees angry.
I guess that's better than wanting to bash his head in.
Fortunately, I know better.
*deep breath*
Final score: 1-2. Nothing to be pissed off about there. Their 2 goals were well deserved. Good job, Peter and Joe.

Desert Tribe vs. Red & The Red Team
Same old, same old. Lots of breakaways and zero goals. I need to practice my wrist shot, but I can't because of my Waah-I'm-Rob shoulder. Boo.
Toward the end of the game, I had the puck by the boards just in front of the goal line. All of my teammates were covered and no one came at me. Red had the net entirely sealed up, but I had all the time in the world, so for fun I launched a slapshot at him. It actually launched! Whoa!
Whoa!
Final score: 0-3. Whoa!

Desert Tribe: The New Guy Rocks
Met the final Tribesman at tonight's game: Steve, who grew up in Canada but hasn't ever played organized hockey. Why hello, Steve, we're so happy to have you. That's a nice hat trick you just had there. Sorry your 4th goal got waved off 'cause the ref was a tad whistle-happy. Hope to see you next week! :-D
I had a few breakaways, and shot all but one of them into the goalie's crotch. :-/
The only one I didn't shoot into his crotch was a beautiful backhand that most defintely should count for at least half a point. :-)
Final score: 7-4. Woot, that rhymes.

Desert Tribe: Night o' Failed Breakaways
My legs are sooore. They're sore from skating up and down the ice as fast as I possibly could. I had (probably more than) ten or so breakaways tonight. I scored on one. One! So lame! I kept looking at the goalie, thinking, "Don't look at the goalie!" It felt kind of like turning left at the track, looking at the burm, thinking, "Don't look at the burm!" Qaploo'ey.
It was good exercise, though. :)
Final score: 1-2.
I'm beat. It's time for bed.

Desert Tribe: Season 2 Game 1
First game of the season, and we had 3 players! Thank goodness for subs. I even got to skate with Heather McJedi. Even better, she called for the puck on a breakaway and I got a sweet assist off her goal. Woot!
Final score: 3-3. We had to forfeit the game 'cause we were short players, but whatever, it was fun. I get to play with Ron this season. Woot again!
Funny moment of the game: I collided with Megan (on the other team) and fell on my ass (ow!). Megan wobbled a little and stayed on her feet. That made me grin. Go Megan!
The Douglet, here on a 2 week Bay Area tour, stopped by to watch the game. Huzzah! Huzzah also for having a Denny's nearby, where we hung out and chatted until 1AM. Zzz ...
Or should I say ... bZzz! :-D
Yeah, okay, maybe one of you understood that last sentence ... and I'm sure of it this time!

Desert Tribe: Last Game of the Season
The season's over! Desert Tribe played a fun game against the team that we all thought would be playing for the Stanley Keg. Instead of a total ass kicking, the other team stopped taking things seriously after going up 6-1 and pretty much let us come back to tie it 6-6. We then went into an 8 round shootout, as mandated by Tony, who stated that every girl on our team had to have a turn. Yes, our bench of 10 had 8 girls on it. I didn't even realize that until halfway through the shootout. Final score: 8-8. Good silly fun to end the season.
I'm a Triber next season, too. I think I'll just keep this category open.

Desert Tribe: Playoff Week!
I'm tired. I didn't even play the entire game, and I'm tired.
We were missing some of our strong skaters and started the game with 7. Early in the 3rd, I left. Soon thereafter, Liz and Andrea left. I totally felt bad about leaving the others so shorthanded. :(
Not too much of the game to recap. I skated my heart out, had some really speedy trips down the ice, and then my shoulder started screaming at me. Screaming, as in, not sore, not very sore, but a crazy sharp(ish) pain every time I tried to move it. That's right about when I decided to leave.
I think we finished the game 0-6. Thanks Red for playing in net for us. Sorry you had to face so many shots.
Had a nice chat with Cara afterward while we watched a very exciting 3rd game. Red, already exhausted and now playing game 3 for a very short bench, stopped a barrage of shots, went 3 periods plus overtime, and finally won after a 3-shot faceoff. Schwew!
Not sure when my shoulder will heal enough for another game. That makes me kinda sad.
Right when I'd finally gotten my ice legs back, too. :(

Hockey Doritos
Spent a day in the sun, headed over to my RWC game, downed most of a Mega Grab bag of Doritos (those are even larger than the Big Grabs) plus a slurpee from the 7-Eleven next door, changed, and went out on the ice.
I was a little worried about what my pregame snack would do to me, but it seemed to do more good than harm. I was actually somewhat speedy tonight. Huzzah!
I'm still not carrying the puck speedily, though. I can't wait to get that back.
Final score: 2-3 (OT). We held our own right up until the end, against the 1st place team. No complaints there.
I finally scored another goal. I got a beautiful pass from Kelly on a 2-on-2, broke free, and somehow managed to get the puck over Red's left shoulder. I'm told it looked pretty, but really, I didn't have time to plan it. Watching the puck hit the back of the net was actually a bit of a surprise for me. In retrospect, that's pretty cool, because I don't accidentally lift anything. That shot may not have been planned, but in a strange body-playing-the-game-sans-brain way it was intentional.
Or maybe it was the Doritos.

Wait A Minute, I Thought This Was Saturday Night Hockey?
It sure didn't feel like it. There was a lot more pushing and bumping and "I'm going to skate into you to get you off the puck" than there usually is in this league. The pushing reminded me of LoTech, and the ref who doesn't ever call anything reminded me of HWO. Boo.
At least everyone was cool when the puck wasn't in play. I still had fun. And ...
Secret Weapon scored 2 goals! WhoO!
She scored our only goals. Final score: 2-2.
I must WhoO! for Secret Weapon again. WhoO!

Ready To Go!
Had another super fun Saturday night game. This was my test-out-the-groin session for tomorrow's Maroon game. The verdict it is in: The groin is okay! No weird twinge, and no post-skate soreness. I'm slow, though. My top speed tonight was nowhere near what it used to be. Where'd my get-up-and-go go?
I'm pretty sure I know where it went, actually. I'm gonna spend the next few weeks trying to get it back. Starting today, I'm keeping a food and exercise journal. No more of this slacking off (I believe I called it "resting the groin") business. No more Häagen Dazs for dinner. Perhaps I'll switch to Ben & Jerry's frozen yogurt.
Anywaaay ...
Okay game for me. I got two assists. Woop.
Great game for Red, he stopped all but one. Woot!
Final score: 5-1. We got a hat trick from Chris, who got to play up tonight. Hooray for subs who can fill in on D!
Boo, no Liz and Andrea. You two missed the moment we've been waiting for all season! Megan scored her first goal! After all the almostgoals of late, she finally sent one over the line. Awesome, awesome, awesome.
And then I forgot to dance for her, even though I said I would. D'oh!
Next time. :)

Hey, What's This Blue Jersey For?
So it turns out I play on this Saturday night team called Desert Tribe. I'd nearly forgotten; it's been too long since my last game with them. 4 weeks? That sounds about right. Stupid groin.
Stupid groin that I'm icing right now 'cause it's sore. :(
In happier news, I scored a goal! Woot! It was kind of funny, actually. I skated the puck down the ice, shot from the right (to me) side of the goal, hit the goalie, shot the rebound, hit the goalie again, shot the rebound, hit the side of the net, shot the "rebound", which at this point was behind the plane of the goal opening. I decided to bounce it off the goalie, and even though I was aiming for his body, I ended up hitting him in the face with the puck, which then bounced into the back of the net. Sorry, goalie!
Heather McJedi, playing D on the other team, worked her mind tricks on me all night. She kept taking the puck from me and asking, "You don't see the puck, do you?" WHAT DO YOU THINK?!? If I saw the puck I'd have it, now, wouldn't I?
That's my story and I'm sticking to it. ;)
Sometime in the 3rd (?) period, I had a little run-in with the boards. There was a puck there, you see, and I wanted it, and there was another skater in my field of vision that looked to want it, and there was this little thought in the back of my head about not reinjuring my groin, and with all that to process, I forgot to stop ... at least not until my head rammed into the boards. Then I stopped.
When I bang my head, I lie flat on my back until I get my bearings. I think that scares some people. I don't mean to scare anyone, really! Someone kept asking me if I was all right, so I lifted a hand to wave. I just needed some time, that's all.
I had a bit of a headache, but fortunately no concussion. Phew.
When I first got the rink, I watched a period or two of the afternoon women's league game in progress. There are some pretty good players in that league. I got a few ideas from them about how to take the puck down the ice, and actually got to try it out during my game. I didn't have my usual speed (groin, boo), but I was able to methodically skate it down and deke 3 players on one of my runs down the ice. Skate, wait, watch them commit, go the other way. So easy!
Just kidding about the easy part.
I hope I made it look easy, though. ;)
Final score: 5-7. Good fun all around.

Desert Tribe vs. Da Sphinx
Had a super fun outing at Ice Oasis tonight. Desert Tribe, 8 skaters strong, took on a 4+3or4subs grey team. We had an excellent game. Our D, our passing, our positioning, our goalie -- everything was on tonight.
Also excellent: everyone on the other team was super friendly. I love chatting with people on the other team as we're skating, jostling, etc. Cracks me up.
We rotated forwards, but I spent most of my shifts playing center tonight. I actually did pretty well! I didn't feel lost, and I managed to win all but one faceoff. Woot!
I got me a goal, too, on a breakaway. Woot again!
Final score: 2-0.
The thing I loved most about this game: Once we got on the scoreboard, we stopped running it up and shooting. Those of us who ran it up always looked to pass, and those of us still learning to shoot always managed to be in the right spot for a pass. I was so excited by how well everyone was doing that I started celebrating shots! Why wait for a goal when your teammate who couldn't skate at the beginning of the season almost just scored? :)
I practiced my backhand shots before the game. I'm lifting 80% of them now, and, oh goodness, they look *much* better than my still wobbly wrist shot.
I took a slapshot during the game. (1) I didn't whiff (2) I didn't fall (3) it lifted and (4) it got on net.
*grin*
I'm still ridiculously out of shape, but that's okay.
Ate dinner upstairs afterward and had a nice chat with Dan while we watched the next game below.
I heart Saturday night hockey.

Desert Tribe vs. The Christmasey Team
I spent the entire day debating whether to play. I came up with a list of reasons for and against.
Reasons I Should Play
|
Reasons I Should Not Play
|
I decided to play, but I almost didn't make it. I had a massive coughing fit a mile from my house. Apparently, my cough did not want me to play. Screw you, death cough, go away.
I was totally out of hockey shape, but I played the entire game. I felt like I was in Denver again. I never skated hard enough for the leg burn, and I was slow. Still, it felt good to be out there. My throat tightened up some when I first got on the ice, but after I got warmed up it was mostly okay. I'm glad I didn't play last night, though. I was slow enough that I would have been a liability.
The Christmasey Team was fast, and they shot a lot. We were not quite as fast, and didn't shoot quite as much. They had Red in net, which was fun, because we could talk to him during the game. We had a goalie from one of the other teams in net, which didn't work out so well for us. Some of us joked afer the game that we should bring earplugs next time so we don't have to listen to him.
This was one of those funny games where I spent half my time rooting for players on the other team. Whenever Steph had the puck, I'd secretly hope that she'd score. We almost had a collision on the ice, and as I tried my darndest to stop, I thought, "Oh no! Don't take out Steph!" I stopped in time. Phew!
I was also rooting for Red, even though I was trying to score on him. :) He *almost* had a shutout. Late-ish in the 3rd, I stopped a clearing pass with my skate and hurled the puck at the net. It bounced, Red wound up out of position, and Chris put it in. I celebrated, went back to the bench, and then thought, "Darn, there goes his shutout." Sorry Red!
Final score: 1-5. Whatever, we had fun.

The Power Of Cap'n Jedi
Desert Tribe played the Sphinx tonight. We were short a few players so we snagged Cap'n Jedi after her game just before ours. I even got to play on a line with her! It was me, her, and Desert Liz at center. Finally, a chance to test the Jedi theory: if I can't score when I play against her, then I *should* score when I play *with* her.
And score I did! I scored me two goals tonight!
Now I'm scared. She really IS a Jedi!
Desert Lizinator scored two goals, too. Much awesomeness. And then she got a penalty. I had to keep up, so I got a penalty too.
Okay, not really. I did get a penalty, but I didn't mean to. Someone on the other team had the puck, and I was skating as hard as I could to backcheck. I meant to go around him, but just as I was trying to pass on his left, he turned that way, and we collided. Oops. Fortunately, no one was hurt (it was pretty ugly). Phew.
A couple other notes. There's a player on the other team who takes the game way too seriously. I want to tell him, chill out, it's Saturday night hockey. I realize there's a Stanley somethingorother to win at the end of the season, but it ain't the Cup, and besides, with all the penalties he's getting he'd better hope his team isn't vying for the least number of penalties wildcard spot at the end of the season.
There, I've said my piece. Well, almost. I guess if I really were to say my piece I'd also ask him to smile a little. Just a wee bit, 'cause everyone else on the ice is, and it'd be really nice if he did too.
Side note about my goals tonight: both were because the goalie went down before I took my shot. Good for me to remember, and a good thing to share with any aspiring goalie readers out there. ;)

Desert Tribe: Fun Losing
Yes, it's true. We can't seem to win, but we have fun every week nonetheless. Tonight, we played a very shorthanded Flying Carpets squad. Cap'n Heather played her Jedi mind tricks on me all game, causing me to cough up the puck every time I came within 3 feet of her. We spent the entire game cheering, both for our team and for our friends on the other team. Gloria suited up to help out with with the FC skater shortage, and it looked like she was just out there toying with us. All I know is, every time I got a breakaway I'd think I was past everyone and all of a sudden Gloria would come from behind and mess me up. Darnit! Darnit darnit darnit! I need to remember to keep my feet moving, even after everyone is out of sight.
Final score: 1-4. Liz Dow-tay! scored our lone goal. You can congratulate her on the goal by sending e-mail to ldoughty-scorinated-oh-yesh-woot-woot@placelizworks.com

Blue Team, Yellow Team
The Tribinators played the Desert Rats (which, tragically, does not include Rat ... how funny would that be?) at Ice Oasis tonight. Kat was back for this game, and she played on a forward line with me and Liz. What an excellent combo! Kat made awesome passes all night, and Liz and I had some good juju in the zone. The best part? Communication! That made all the difference in the world.
After 3 periods and a quick 4-on-4 overtime, we finished the game tied 1-1. I scored the lone goal! It was reminiscent of the one in game one, my tip-in off Secret Weapon's shot from point. This time, she shot, the goalie stopped it, and the puck just sat there next to his pads until I gently poked it over the goal line.
Yes, I gently poked it. I know that it's fair game to whack away if the puck is in the crease, but I'm just unable to whack when I know that there's a goalie there. I don't want to hurt the goalie! Right, as if someone my size could actually inflict damage.
On an unrelated note, enough people rubbed my head tonight that I lost count. Apparently there's something intriguing about red sortamohawks. Intriguing, perhaps a little like Liz's red pants.
On a somewhat related note to the two notes above, Susi, who had mentioned last week that there was someone she wanted me to meet, actually had that someone show up tonight. Of course, I didn't know about it beforehand, and when she told me just before the game, I thought, huh, interesting timing on the red sortamohawk.
Got invited to play the game after mine (thanks, Rat!) but decided to be social in the cushy Ice Oasis restaurant instead. Spent 2 hours talking instead of eating, came home and set my toaster oven on fire. Apparently I didn't have enough calories left in me to remember that (1) I was toasting something and (2) bread is flammable. Good job, me.

Desert Tribe = Fun Fun Hockey
Saturday night hockey is FUN! I got to be my goofy self tonight, and boy did that feel good! Who cares if we lost our scrimmage 1-4? We had fun!
Ooh ooh, as an added bonus, I scored our lone goal off my FIRST EVER SNAPSHOT! I learned how to take a snapshot over two years ago, and tonight was the first night I ever tried one in a game, on an incoming puck, no less! It works! It works! It lifted, and hit the middle of the post that runs down the back of the net. Huzzah!
Snap-in-ate! Yesss!
I also tried to bend my knees more skating. I *think* I'm doing a little better. We got some extra ice time after the game and I worked some on getting around people on my backhand side, plus a nifty little head-on deke move, thanks to some tips from Tony. That, and about a gazillion 2-on-0 variations to net with da Lizinator.
Tiiired!

Let The Tribination Begin!
Skated in the first session of my first Ice Oasis season tonight. We did some drills, followed by a scrimmage. I have a few pieces of good news, and a couple pieces of bad news.
(G) Our team is full of grrreat people. Yes, we're Frosted Flakes grrreat.
(G) I lifted my first ever backhand tonight. On net, no less!
(B) I have no idea how I did it.
(G) I scored my first ever tip-in goal tonight, off a beautiful shot from Secret Weapon.
(B) I have no idea how I did that, either.
(G) Kat's on our team! What a pleasant surprise!
(G) We have friends on every team in this division.
It's gonna be a fun season!
Cap'n Heather was on the opposing team tonight. She played right D, I played left wing, and, surprise surprise, every time I skated in I'd see her and lose the puck.
Here's what I think is going on: I have a weak mind, and Cap'n Heather's a Jedi.
I'm going to start a new Tribination tradition in my blog ...
Tonight's word of the game: tip-inate! :-D
