Le Snack Game 16: Thanks All For A Fun Season!
Le Snack played their final game of the season tonight.
Aww, the season's over! Already??
We played a heck of a game - 40 shots on net! I think that's our season high.
We were shooting on Sarah, though, and she was on. Again. I can still vividly see her butterfly kicking her leg up while already down on the ice to block a shot. Oh, wait, that was MY shot. Actually, I think that was my first ever planned-and-lifted backhand.
Re: The crazy save and the 39-out-of-40 shots saved game - go Sarah!
Re: My first every planned-and-lifted backhand - thanks Josepi!
Speaking of Sarah, she baked a cake the day before and brought me a slice. :-D
Final score; 1-4. The other team had 20-something shots on net. I think we left our goalie in a tough spot on 3 of those, though - open skaters in front of the net are never a good thing.
We had 2 Snacks for our final game. Corey brought 4 dozen peanut butter chocolate cookies, of which I had NONE. Why do I miss out on all the Corey Snacks?! Fortunately, Malinda brought brownies, and she put the corners in a bag just for me! Totally awesome. Thank you Malinda!
Speaking of cookies and brownies, instead of shouting "Go Snaaaaack!" during the game I switched to "Cookiiiiies!" and "Browniiiiies!" in the 3rd period. Oh, how I amuse myself.
Thanks, you guys, for making my 2nd Maroon season a super fun one. :)

Le Snack Game 15: That Other Team With The Snacks
Le Snack tried a little experiment today, swapping a few forwards back to D.
It didn't go so well.
Still, we had fun.
And we had snacks afterward: chocolate chocolate cupcakes!
I forgot to have one. :(
Poopie.
Final score: 3-7. Lindsay had a hat trick. I came out even-ish. I played D today, but despite the 7 goals on us, I don't personally feel too bad. I think I was covering a player in scoring position each time the puck went in on my shift. Oh well.
Nicole from Red division played with us. I've been wondering all season what a Lindsay-Sharon-Nicole line would be like. I was not disappointed.
We had a triple-purpose Snack party after the game: an end of the season birthday baby shower. Yaaay.

Le Snack Game 14: Les Mudskippers
Le Snack, minus 4 plus 1, played an excellent game at Belmont tonight. We had Tami in net and she was her usual goaliewall self. Not much to say, except that we played hard, we had fun, we scored 4, and we won. Whoo, I rhymed.
Final score: 4-2.
I don't feel like molasses anymore. Yaaay.
I'm still not comfy, though. I'm not being patient with the puck. I know I have more time than I think I do. I just need to remember that when I have the puck.

Le Snack Game 13: M2 Again
Okay, I think I'm now *slightly* less slow than I was 2 weeks ago, but I'm still not back to full speed, nor am I able to turn or stop or skate with the puck like I used to. I guess it didn't help that my whole body hurts (what am I fighting off?). Anyway, I begged off D today to play, uh, center, which is probably not the best position to be playing when you're not feeling well, but for other reasons worked out well for the team.
It worked out well in large part because Ellaine played D instead, and she did a rockin' job.
We had rockin' subs, too, but unfortunately we had to give one away. :(
Final score: 2-3. Boo, we lost. Oh well. Despite being frustrated by my subpar game, I had fun cheering for my Snackmates. I always do. :)

Le Snack Game 12: Comeback!
Le Snack created a new team cheer tonight.
The events leading up to the cheer:
- A dismal start. I think the shot count was 5-17 or something after the 1st period.
- Going down 0-3 by the end of the 2nd period.
- Krista calling for a cheer before the start of the 3rd period.
"What should we cheer?" someone asked.
"Eat 'em up!" someone else replied.
Too funny! It worked, though. We finished the 3rd period tied 3-3.
Ingrid, sub extraordinaire, then got herself a hattie and us a win by scoring in OT. Thank you, Ingrid!
The most satisfying thing, however, was the shot count by the end of the game: 29-29. :)
I was a tad less slow tonight than I was last Sunday, no thanks in part to Krista, who got me going by ribbing me endlessly for getting outskated last week by a player who generally gets outskated by, hrmm, everyone. She made it a point to announce it to the team during the game, just before her request for a cheer.
After the game, Karen and Lisa stopped by our locker room to give me something. I saw a Ziploc bag, and for a fleeting yet hopeful moment thought, "Ooh! Maybe it's a yummy snack!"
It was not a yummy snack.
Speaking of not yummy snacks, Liz and Andrea picked up a box of "Power Cookies" from 99 Ranch before the game. They looked like imitation Royal Dansk cookies. I'm told they tasted like imitation cookies, period. I decided I didn't need to find out for myself.
Besides, I was too busy taking pictures of the Ziploc spider. They're kinda petlike if you manage to seal them up.
No, I didn't keep it.

Le Snack Game 11: M2
I feel like I never get to play with this team anymore, which is totally sad because I so love Le Snack. I finally played again today, but I felt totally out of it. I was slow.
No, not slow. Slooow.
I got outskated all game. This is bad, because (1) It makes me angry when someone beats me to a puck that I know I should reach first. (2) It drives me nuts, absolutely NUTS, when I get outskated by someone that I can usually beat.
So, after the game, I went to the gym. I need to get strong again. It wouldn't hurt to build up some endurance, either. I'd like to feel like more than just filler out there.
The groin was okay for the game, but is a little sore. Good thing the injury ice packs haven't (yet) become a semi-permanent part of my freezer.
Final score: 2-2. First goal by Lindsay. Second goal by, you guessed it, Lindsay.
Sarah came up huge for us. She let in two in the first period, but stopped everything they threw at her after that. They threw some good stuff her way, too. Go pimp go.
Le Snack of the game: chocolate chip cookies, chilled. Awesome.

Le Snack Game 9: Ice Chex
Played my first game in 3 weeks today. The groin held up! WhoO!
We won, too! Ingrid got a goal. Woot! Ellaine had two goals. WOOT! Leah got a goal after that. That was d4 w0o7zoR. She got to take the scoresheet home. :)
Final score: 4-2. SOG: 20-29. Sarah did a great job for us in net, sunburned back and all.
I played D with Liz today. I kept skating in too deep on offense and having to scramble when the puck headed back toward our zone. I have this image from the game sorta stuck in my head, from the last of the scrambles: Me, skating hard as I could, chasing three of them, with nothing but Liz between them and our goalie. Sorry, Liz! On the upside, they didn't score. Go Liz! :-D
Today was the first time since my little epiphany 3 weeks ago that I finally had a chance to work more on chasing down breakaways. Someone somewhat speedy on the other team was heading down the ice, with Ellen on her back and no one in front of her. I skated as hard as I could straight down the middle, passing them as they crossed the blue line, and cut in front of her at the faceoff dot, stripping the puck away in the process. I've never cut off a breakaway from behind before. Holy crap, I can actually do it! A whole new world of breakaway chasing has just opened up for me. Huzzah!
Oh, and we had cupcakes. Chocolate frosting. Yum.

Le Snack Game 8: Mudskippers
I've missed the last two games no thanks to a groin pull, but at least I managed to come cheer for this one (and do other goodly things like bringing the roster and pucks and finding subs). Le Snack, full of Les Subs, played a frenzied game at Fremont this afternoon, outshooting the other team 31-20 and finishing the game tied 5-5 after three periods of cheerworthy hockey.
Great game, Le Snack! Thanks for playing with us, Les Subs!
May the Snack be with you.
I don't know why I find that so funny.

Le Snack Game 6: Brownies!
Um, I mean, Ice Chex!
*munches on brownie*
Played another super fun Le Snack game tonight. Everyone played *so* well. It was great to watch our team playing hard, skating fast, and having a good time.
We did have more penalties than usual. A couple trips and a hooking, maybe? I think our average this season is <1 per game, so tonight's count was not very Snacklike. Maybe it's 'cause we were all playing hard.
Penalties aside, playing hard paid off. We won!
Final score: 2-1. Malinda scored! Woot! I got an assist on it! Woot again! Lindsay scored our other goal, surprise surprise. ;)
I learned a couple things tonight.
Thing 1: Just keep skaaating. I've long known that I need to keep skating, and skating hard, to catch someone in front of me, but for some reason I've always slowed down as the distance between us decreased, resulting in my never catching them. I'm finally learning to consciously tell myself to keep skating during such chases, and, imagine that, it actually works! Watching it finally start to work is a great incentive to skate even harder, so I can someday see it work realy well (I hope!).
Thing 2: Stay away from Mary. Late in the 3rd period, a puck scooted loose to the edge of the rink. Mary and I went after it. As I was skating to the puck, I thought, "Mary's not going to back off, and I will arrive at the puck a split second before she does, so either I can back off, or I can brace for impact." I wasn't about to back off, even though I know Mary can send me across the ice. Unfortunately, she sent me straight into the boards, and I found myself lying there on my back, dazed and with the wind totally knocked out of me. I realized I was right next to my bench, so I somehow made myself get up and hop off. My head didn't hit anything, but I think I got a concussion via whiplash. My neck is starting to get sore. Ugh!
Le Snack of the night: brownies, separated into center and edge pieces and labeled as such. Awesome.
Before the game, Lorel gave me a maroon bandana, and that's why I got my first point of the season tonight. Thanks, Lorel!

Le Snack Game 5: Hooray, I'm Back!
I've missed my team! It's sooo good to be back! Le Snack played the Mudskippers tonight. It was a fast and very fun game all around. Even though we lost, I'm grinning from ear to ear.
Final score: 2-4.
The score shows only 2 goals, but we had 42 shots on net. Unfortunately for us, Tami was between the puck and the back of the net, and she was ON tonight. You can't get much past her when she's playing that well.
That's not to say I didn't try. I had 4 or 5 breakaways this game, and she stopped every one. On the upside, her ability to stop any direct shot forced me to deke to my backhand on the last of my breakaways. I've never done that before. I think I executed it pretty well for my first attempt. I didn't crash, and I didn't whiff. Woot! I didn't score, either, but I'll chalk that up to a great stacked pad slide on Tami's part.
I also spent a good amount of time with my ass parked in front of her face. "Get Viv's tooshie out of my face!" she yelled, but no one came shove me. I wiggled my tooshie in response. :)
Shooting, passing, cycling, screening, figure skating, laughing ... we did it all tonight. Can't ask for much more.
Oh, but wait, there *was* more! Team pictures and a fun dinner afterward, too!
I heart Le Snack.

Le Snack Game 3: The Replacements
I'd been looking forward to tonight's game for a couple weeks now. Le Snack vs. the team that was pretty much my team from last season, or, the team that I should have been on last season (now improved!) vs. The Replacements.
It was everything I wanted, except that I didn't play.
I did go to the rink to cheer my team on, though. And cheer I did, from just before the first puck drop all the way to the bench after the game. I wonder if I'll be able to talk tomorrow.
We'd received a couple unsolicited scouting reports on this team well before the game. We'd heard about how they'd routed one of the other teams ... twice. 9-1 and 8-1 or something like that. These guys were 3-0. We were 1-1.
Go, Le Snack, go! You can do it!
It was so weird watching my team during the warmups. Those were my teammates out there. What was I doing in the bleachers? "I wanna plaaay!" I whined at Andrea, followed by a cough.
Once the puck dropped, I fell into fan mode without any trouble. I yelled, a lot. I jumped up and down when our team scored. You wouldn't have known from watching me in the bleachers that I was too sick to play.
So here's how the game went down ...
Early in the first period, they scored. Eeek, we thought ... but we held them. We tied it in the 2nd, off a goal from Liiiz! Then they came back with another (darnit!). We entered the 3rd period 1-2, but Lindsay, always huge, took the puck all the way down the ice, through a defender, around another defender, across the goalie, and nonchalantly backhanded it across the goal line.
Okay, I don't know that she did it nonchalantly, but she sure made it look that way.
The final buzzer sounded at 2-2, and after some discussion the refs allowed an overtime. 14 seconds later, it was over, with the puck sitting in their net, and another goal under Lindsay's belt. How the heck does she do that?!
When I saw the ref's hand go out, I jumped up and down, jumped off the bleachers, banged on the boards, ran around to the bench on the other side of the rink, and high-fived everyone on my team. Then I went out into the lobby and coughed. I felt kind of nauseated, too. Too much coughing!
But whatever! We won! That was sooo sweet.
Sweet, like the chocolate-chocolate cupcakes that Malinda brought, the box of donuts that Becky brought, and the orange slices and homemade chocolate chip cookies that Corey brought. We had a sweets feast in the locker room afterward!
Le Snack is awesome. Partly for the snacks, but mostly for the people. :)
Final score: 3-2 ... plus a bit o' posterity.

Le Deuxiem Snacktice
Corey was out of town for tonight's snacktice, so I asked Kevin to come coach us. I've totally missed having him as a coach, and, as a bonus, Doris came and I got to skate around with her for the first time in months. Kevin ran us through some awesome drills that somehow involved skating, stick handling, passing, puck protection, plays, positioning, and keeping Cara busy in net all at the same time. Those of us who'd played for him in the past were totally stoked, and some of us who hadn't were equally stoked by the end of the session. I felt like we learned a ton tonight. What a productive snacktice!
And, of course, we had snacks! La Becky brought Twinkies and Ding Dongs, which we shared with Sam the rink guy and some folks on the other team.
Huh-huh, I said dong.

Le Snack Game 2: That Other Team
Le Snack played their second game tonight, against that other team ... you know, the one with the twins and the white gloves. :) I don't remember what they're called. Something edible, maybe.
We had a somewhat shaky start, giving up 3 goals in the first 20 minutes. We came back with 2 in the 2nd period, but weren't able to tie the game with a 3rd. That's okay, we played hard, and there's really nothing to complain about.
Final score: 2-3.
I played D tonight, with Heather McJedi by my side. I think I did all right. No goals were scored on my watch, and I finished the game +1. I had 2 or 3 wide open scoring chances, but I have a weak wristshot and a slow windup slapshot, so I didn't do anything useful with them. In retrospect, I could have skated those in and taken a much higher percentage wrist shot. I have much more time than I think I do out there. I have to remember that when I get the puck.
Playing D feels weird to me. I feel bad for having to shove people around all night. It's totally not in my nature to tangle with people. Wing is more my style: try to get open and avoid all that shoving. Heh.
I somehow managed to wreck my left forearm during the game. I think I either slammed it into the boards, or, more likely, wrenched it between a player and the boards. When I took my elbow pad off, there was a dotted grid imprint of the inside padding material along a 3 inch section of my arm. I thought the padding material was soft? Oh, it is. I wrenched it that hard. That whole area is swollen now. Should be purpley and pretty tomorrow morning.
In cute snackey news, La Lisa printed up name labels for everyone's helmets so Corey (Le Coach) can learn our names. I get to be La Viv. Our snack bag got a sticker too: Le Snack (of course!). We should print up a Les Pucks label for our puck bag. Yes, the bags are identical.
Le snack of the night: sliced oranges with a side of grapes and bananas. I took them out to the bench during the game to keep them chilled. :)

Le Snacktice
I don't usually write about practices, but tonight's was worth noting. Le Snack had their first practice of the season, and most of the team got to meet our coach, Corey. Everyone loved him, and he was totally stoked to be coaching us for the season. Practice was a blast, and our whole team came off the ice with smiles on our faces. I'm super excited; it's gonna be a great season! :)
Le Snack of the night: chocolate chip cookies. I volunteered to bring our snack for Tuesday's game; Malinda shouldn't have to feed us every week! The team voted for fruit, so fruit it will be ... delivered in a puck bag, of course.
Vive Le Snack!
Almost forgot. While the other team was doing their requisite two hard laps at the end of the session, Corey suggested we skate too, and then told us to give him one leisurely lap.
That's worth a few days of grinning, at least. :-D

Le Snack Game 1: Yesssh!
Le Snack (named based on 2 whole votes, one of which was from a captain) played their first game of the season today. It was goofy, silly, fun ... overall just a great time. As it should be!
We won, to boot! Our two Red Division promotees each scored two apiece in their first official Maroon game. Wowww.
Final score: 4-2.
It went down like this. Lindsay scored. A bit later Sharon scored. A bit later I said to Lindsay, "If Sharon scores again you have to score another one too." A bit later Sharon scored. 10 seconds later Lindsay scored another one too. Dammmn.
Le Snack of the day: minty brownies. Yummm.
